Return
to Modern Furniture Artisans & Designs
I've
been designing and building furniture for over 20 years. Included
in our designs are references to Art Deco, Beidermeier, Arts
and Crafts, Greene and Greene, Traditional styles, and others.
You can order pieces as they are shown, others from our extensive
portfolio, or commission a new design. We deal with many different
budgets and design requirements including some commercial
work. We welcome your input and enjoy new challenges.

Table
and chairs. This style is representative of my "Studio" style.
This is the table and chairs from my very own house. Natural cherry
and black paint, top surface inlay of black painted maple strips.
The chairs are modern takes on the classic Windsor style: flattened
turned back splats; angled seats, legs and stretchers; black paint.
The table is about 36" x 78", seats 8, the chairs take up about 20"
x 20" x 37". |
Joan's
Pieces. Joan is a client with a strong design sense. For these
pieces she brought me a photo from Antiques Magazine of a case piece
by C.R. Ashby, a British architect from around the turn of the century
(1904). His piece was dark mahogany and satinwood and considerably
busier in the inlay department. We simplified the inlay pattern and
used a couple of planks of blistered and curly maple that I resawed
into thick veneer for the faces of these two pieces. We also did a
52" round dining table for the same room. There were skylights over
the whole thing and a big sliding glass door to a deck. Nice. Over
the last 15 years, Joan and her husband have commissioned almost 20
pieces from me and have gotten, in return, some of my best work. |
Susan's
Bed. These are three of the 17 abalone and mother-of-pearl inlays
in the headboard. My original sketch had some abalone fish swimming
in the "waves" of ebony on the top edge of the headboard, but since
this client is a nationally known artist/designer, we felt we should
probably use her designs on her bed. We worked together on the full
size drawings and this is what came out. There's also a matching tall
bureau with one of those tilting mirrors on the top with some more
smaller birds and stars and stuff on it. These pieces were fantastic
fun. |
Bob's
card tables. This client had a very formal dining room and went
shopping for a pair of card tables to put under his nice mirrors.
He found that a nice pair with a confirmed provenance might run into
six figures. With his input, I'd already done a paneled library/fly
tying/TV room for his New York City apartment with wood from his Vermont
property, and so we went looking for inspiration. We found a single
half round card table with all the right stuff in the Clark Art Museum.
They let us measure it, photograph it, and recommended a book called
"The Work of Many Hands," a definitive tome on the card table subject.
About 400 hours later we had this pair of tables. I later found another
example, which I'm sure was by the same maker, in the Met. It had
"D" shaped ends like these. It's under the stairs in The American
Wing last time I looked. |

Triangle
Sideboard. This piece represents my studio style, once removed.
This client happens to be an excellent intuitive designer with a strong
communication suit. I'm particularly fond of the carved elements on
the front of this piece. She lifted them from a bed headboard in my
portfolio and later used another version of them to hold up a stereo/CD
storage cabinet that we built for her family room. |
