I came to furniture making through a love of working with wood; everything from cutting firewood to slicing fine shavings with a hand plane was enjoyable to me as a teenager. I still find each phase of furniture making fascinating, from designing new pieces to picking trees that will yield exceptional lumber, to milling and hand working each piece of furniture that lumber yields. I work primarily with native hardwood, much of which I have harvested myself.

I am committed to the notion that for furniture to be of lasting value to its owners it must be not only well crafted of carefully selected wood, but it must fit its surroundings and the taste of its owner. For this reason, I work closely with clients in the design of each commissioned piece I build.

The pieces shown below have been sold. I picture them here as examples of my design sense, and to show some of the variety in my work. I enjoy designing and building pieces in a wide range of styles, from refined to free form. I have created pieces as diverse as European style cabinets to live edge coffee tables. I would be happy to build similar pieces or to discuss your ideas for a commissioned piece.

Clydesdale Coffee Table.
American Elm and Beech.

I built this piece as an exercise; I needed diversion from the straight simple look of many Shaker pieces IĠd built and I wanted to design a piece that would join gentle curves and straight lines gracefully. In the course of its construction, I used all but the tiniest scraps of wood from a log that had been cut fifteen years before by a fellow woodworker who finally decided to clean out his garage and sell the wood to me. The table attracts attention, not only because of its design and fine wood, but because of the unusual tenons of the legs which protrude slightly though the top. I plan to build more pieces to go with the coffee table in a style I call Clydesdale, taken from the flair of its legs and large feet

Curly and Spalted Maple.

I often reserve the finest woods I find for boxes that will hold precious objects. This box features some of the most attractive maple I have found. The curly maple sides set off the fine lines and color variations in the spalted maple top panel. The dovetails are meticulously hand cut. The hardware is solid brass.
